Protection is one of ORAM’s programmatic pillars — ensuring LGBTIQ refugees have safety and stability as they rebuild their lives. One way we provide this protection in transit countries is through safe, short-term housing, made possible with generous support from Airbnb.org

ORAM first launched its short-term housing program three years ago in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In 2023, we expanded the program to Kenya, offering temporary housing through Airbnb to new arrivals, many of whom are from Uganda, following the passage of the country’s Anti-Homosexuality Act.

With continued support from Airbnb.org, we’ve launched our third emergency short-term housing program in Mexico City. Since late 2024, this program has provided LGBTIQ asylum seekers and refugees with 30 days of housing, giving them time to secure employment or find safe, longer-term housing solutions.

Thanks to additional funds raised through ORAM’s GoFundMe campaign this past summer, we provide everyone with emergency cash assistance for transportation and food.

Even within its first month, this program has already transformed lives. Gabriel*, a gay refugee from Colombia, faced overwhelming challenges securing safe, stable housing in Mexico City. “In Mexico, there are so many requirements for tenants, and it’s very complicated to meet them, especially as a refugee,” he shared.

Angel, a transgender man from Venezuela, encountered similar struggles. “When I arrived, I faced many employment obstacles and discrimination because of my gender expression, health issues, and disability,” he said.

For Angel, the 30-day stay provided a much-needed calm during an uncertain time. “Having a safe, stable roof over my head, I felt comfortable focusing on my plans and next steps for my future,” he reflected.

Gabriel echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the program’s life-changing impact. “[The housing] gave me the sense of security I didn’t have at the time,” he shared. “It exceeded my expectations, and the comfort, financial support, and food assistance is a blessing for people from the community and those of us who arrived in Mexico after being forcibly displaced from our home countries.”

Additionally, Gabriel deeply appreciated the care he received from ORAM’s team on the ground. “René A. Tec-López (ORAM’s Mexico Program Officer) was incredibly kind, respectful, and empathetic to my situation,” he said.

After the 30-day stay, Angel is still seeking stable, longer-term housing. While he continues his search, he hopes others can experience the relief this program provided him. “I am infinitely grateful for this support. I hope ORAM can continue offering housing to LGBTIQ refugees who are without shelter,” he expressed.

Gabriel, now in secure housing, shares Angel's hope. “I hope you continue helping people because it feels like a blessing that you exist.”

ORAM extends our deepest gratitude to Airbnb.org and every donor who contributed to our GoFundMe campaign. Your support makes this life-changing program possible.
