LGBT individuals around the world often face persecution and extreme violence in their home countries owing to their sexual orientation and / or gender identity and expression (SOGIE). Those who can, flee their countries of origin in search of a safer environment and better life. However, this journey is not easy and LGBT asylum seekers and refugees are frequently victims of discrimination, isolation, violence and abuse along the way to a safe third country. Despite the growing awareness among governments and institutions and the appearance of a more inclusive protection system, full rights and adequate support for sexual and gender minorities (SGM) are not guaranteed.
ORAM focuses its efforts on systems and individuals alike, ensuring system-wide change is fostered informed by the population served. Based on individual testimonies we raise awareness on the lack of protection for SGMs. Through the use of innovative tools and thought-leading research, ORAM tackles some of the largest issues regarding SGMs.
Through capacity building, ground-breaking research and collaborative relationships with governments, international organisations and NGO’s worldwide, ORAM has successfully increased system-wide awareness and protection of SGM asylum seekers and refugees. To maintain intimate knowledge of the system and to provide assistance to internationally displaced individuals, ORAM provides direct assistance to LGBT asylum seekers and refugees in the field and collaborates with local stakeholders central to our strategy to ensure that our work is built from the grass roots upwards
Founded in 2008, ORAM specializes in the protection of exceptionally vulnerable refugees, including LGBTI refugees. A thought leader in refugee protection, we are trusted by governments, international agencies, aid organizations and refugees alike. ORAM’s essential work enables the international community to protect exceptionally vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers and safeguards the integrity of the international refugee protection system.
